Every April 22nd, in celebration of Earth Day, we’re making a small and simple list of things that we all can do for the day that make our lives just a little greener. We hope to show and reiterate that “going green” will not affect a person’s lifestyle. In fact, most probably won’t realize that they’ve changed their habit once the routine starts to become a natural and daily habit. All our good and bad habits are just that — routines, convenient or not. Hoping that this little guide may spark a green revolution (hey, we can dream!), here are a few simple things to ease you into the green routine:
When you’re brushing your teeth in the morning, many of us make it a habit to leave the faucet on when we brush. For today, let’s see what happens when you leave them off while you’re brushing and only turn them on when you need to?
Instead of using paper towels to wipe every wet or dirtied surface, find an old towel or t-shirt you don’t intend to wear anymore and use it as a cleaning rag. They’re reusable!
Whether you’re bringing lunch to work or school, instead of using a paper or plastic sandwich bag, use a small plastic container. If you don’t have one, pick one up next time you’re at the market. It’s cheap and also reusable!
Use daylight or sunlight for lighting when you can. At home or at the office, if you’ve got the blinds down and the lights on during the day, turn the lights off and pull up those blinds!
Try to use the dishwater only when you’ve got it filled up. Using the dishwater to clean as much as you can in one cycle will help cut down on water usage.
If you happen to be shopping for home supplies today, take a stroll down the light bulb aisle. See the light bulbs that say “compact fluorescent” (or CFL)? Those are energy-efficient light bulbs. If you have a room where the lights are consistently on, consider replacing them with CFLs.
If it isn’t raining or, better yet, the sun is shining just beautifully, instead of using the dryer, why not try hang drying your washed clothes?
And, lastly, we couldn’t possibly end this list without pushing what we believe in. Composting. Here is a simple list of what you can and cannot compost. Composting might not sound like the simplest thing to do, but if you’re a gardening enthusiast and haven’t experienced the wonders that await your garden through compost soil, you will be missing out on the environmental benefits of composting for your garden and for the earth.
To celebrate the special occasion, GREENCulture is featuring some wonderful value bundles on the Rain Catcher rain barrel and Verme Tower Worm Bin (including a free pound of red wiggler worms) at Composters. Over at Eco-Lights, Eco-Furniture, and GCRugs include an additional 5% off orders on top of the 50% off everything sale.
Happy Earth Day!
